Because They Serve, We Can Serve: A Concert of Remembrance

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges, it has also allowed us to explore new ways to connect with one another. The 2020 Concert of Remembrance — involving choirs, soloists, a brass band and community leaders — was held virtually to continue a tradition of honouring and remembering those who serve in the armed forces, both past and present. Members of the Oshawa Ontario Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created the concert with musical and verbal video tributes from several community partners.

Remembrance Day is an opportunity for each of us to reflect on and appreciate the many brave men and women who heroically served or currently serve our country. However, we can do more than just pause to remember them once each year. The Oshawa Ontario Stake invites all to find a local volunteer opportunity posted on JustServe.org and give regular volunteer service as a way to continually honour our veterans and current armed forces members. The stake’s JustServe team coined the “Because They Serve, We Can Serve” phrase and hashtag as a service initiative for the month of November.

Alex Walcer, president of the Oshawa Ontario Stake, said, “I hope that this Concert of Remembrance will serve its purpose for those who view it, that we will be mindful not only of the opportunities that we have to serve in our community but why we have these opportunities — [because of] the great freedom that we enjoy as citizens of this country. I hope that as we come together as members of the community, to be able to serve each other, that good will be done.”
