Church Donation in New Brunswick Feeds Hope

New Brunswick ranks among the Canadian provinces with the highest levels of food insecurity, with over 25% of residents struggling to access enough nutritious food. In an expression of community support, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated $400,000 to Feed New Brunswick (Feed NB), the province’s central food bank network. This gift adds to the $237,000 already contributed by the Church to New Brunswick food banks and service organizations since 2023.

Stéphane Sirois, Feed NB’s executive director, reported, “This generous support … will directly strengthen our ability to purchase and distribute healthy food to families in need. At a time when demand is rising, partnerships like this make an immediate and tangible difference.”

Feed NB: Fighting Hunger, Reducing Waste

Feed NB, a non-profit based in Moncton, New Brunswick, advocates, “Hunger isn’t inevitable — it’s solvable” (FeedNB.ca). The organization operates a central distribution warehouse to support food banks, community kitchens and student nutrition programs across the province.

Carrie Delaney, Feed NB’s membership, programs and service manager, explains that the non-profit also runs a food recovery and distribution program. She said, “In addition to purchasing food, we work with grocery stores, restaurants, farmers and other food providers to collect surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. Once it reaches our warehouse, the food is sorted, inspected and distributed through a provincial network to community-based food banks.”

Bonnie Porter, the Saint John New Brunswick Stake Relief Society president, toured the Feed NB warehouse in July 2025. She noted, “Feed NB plays a vital role in supporting communities throughout New Brunswick. Their dedication and efforts are remarkable in action.”

Porter added, “The work Feed NB is doing aligns closely with faith-based motivations to serve and support the community. As followers of Jesus Christ, our faith calls us to serve others, and this donation reflects our commitment to love our neighbours by offering relief to people in need.”

In Canada, food insecurity has reached critical levels over the past five years, with national food bank visits increasing by 90%. This growing pressure affects individuals, families, communities, service organizations and government agencies across the country.

Community partnerships can make a significant difference in addressing the growth of food insecurity. “Together, we can ensure that more people have access to the nutritious food they need, while also building a stronger, more caring province,” said Sirois.

The Church’s humanitarian efforts span the globe. In 2024, it contributed $1.45 billion to 3,836 projects in 192 countries and territories, with members volunteering 6.62 million hours of service. Learn more at churchofjesuschrist.org/serve/caring.
