International Women’s Day Recognizes the Contribution of Women Around the Globe

International Women’s Day celebrates the inspirational work of women globally and is an opportunity to highlight women’s valuable contributions. The United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day 2015, celebrated March 8, is “Empowering Women — Empowering Humanity: Picture It.” Women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints embrace many of the challenges this theme envisions, such as exercising choice, getting an education and celebrating the potential of women everywhere.

Mormon women compose Relief Society, one of the oldest and largest women’s service organizations in the world. With a membership of 5.5 million women in more than 170 countries — a membership that is increasing by thousands each year — Relief Society is a tremendous vehicle for service around the globe.

Classes and meetings are held on Sundays and at other times for women to learn and discuss doctrine, to increase spirituality, to learn helpful skills to strengthen families and homes and to help others.

President Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has stated, “I have felt to provide each member of Relief Society throughout the world three goals to meet: (1) gain knowledge through study; (2) make home a heaven; and (3) find joy in service” (“The Mighty Strength of the Relief Society,” October 1997 general conference).
