The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is helping thousands of families facing food insecurity in Nova Scotia through a $400,000 donation to Feed Nova Scotia. This donation supplements the $350,000 the Church provided to Feed Nova Scotia in November 2023. Together, these two donations will provide 1.125 million meals.
Kelly Currie, Feed Nova Scotia fund development manager, said, “As food banks across Nova Scotia continue to see record numbers of visits, we are grateful for the incredible generosity of community groups like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With this donation, we can support our member agencies as they work hard to meet the growing need in their communities and explore new ways to address the root causes of food insecurity.”
Local food banks are struggling to keep up with demand, and food insecurity in Nova Scotia is reaching crisis levels. Forty per cent of children under 18 in Nova Scotia are food insecure. Feed Nova Scotia collects and distributes approximately three million kilograms of food annually to 140 member food banks, meal programs and shelters across the province.
President Jonathan Fox of the Dartmouth Nova Scotia Stake said, “Living in Nova Scotia at this time, we see the tremendous struggle many experience to obtain basic necessities, including food. The work done by Feed Nova Scotia is life-saving and motivated by compassion and care for those in need. We are grateful to be able to provide support.”
President Fox emphasized that giving service is fundamental to Church beliefs. In the scriptures, we read: “And remember in all things the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doeth not these things, the same is not my disciple” (Doctrine and Covenants 52: 40).
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers help worldwide, providing general humanitarian aid and supporting victims of natural disasters. In 2023, the Church contributed $1.36 billion toward 4,119 humanitarian projects in 191 countries, and its members volunteered 6.2 million hours of relief service globally.
