Community Open House Held to Discuss Construction of Lethbridge Alberta Temple

Community members in Lethbridge, Alberta, recently had the opportunity to learn more about the temple soon to be built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lethbridge. On Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Church held an open house for those living near the site to learn about the temple.

The Church’s project team working on the temple was in attendance to answer questions about the plan for the 9-acre property located at the corner of Whoop Up Drive West and Mauretania Road West. They also shared information about the purpose of temples, which Latter-day Saints consider to be the most sacred places on Earth.

“We are grateful for the community leaders and neighbours who came to the open house,” Area Seventy David C. Stewart said. “This was a good opportunity for us to share information about the temple, which is so important to the thousands of Latter-day Saints living in the Lethbridge area.”

Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen, who attended with three members of the Lethbridge City Council, stated, “The construction of the Lethbridge Alberta Temple is a profound honour for our city, reflecting the rich tapestry of faith, unity and progress that defines our community. This remarkable edifice is not only a sacred space for the local Latter-day Saint members but also a beacon of opportunity and inspiration for all residents. We are proud to embrace this extraordinary addition to our city, one that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.”

Three pastors of other churches in Lethbridge and a CBC news reporter were among the approximately 200 attendees at the event.

Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ from meetinghouses or chapels, where members meet for Sunday worship services. Each temple is considered a “house of the Lord,” where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through baptism< and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve others.

The First Presidency of the Church has not yet announced a groundbreaking date for the Lethbridge Alberta Temple, but some preliminary work on the site began in October 2024.
